Aki Traar is a composer, sound-artist and producer based in Vienna, Austria.
He studied electroacoustic and experimental music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Thomas Grill, Katharina Klement and Wolfgang Musil, graduating with distinction. He wrote his thesis on the aesthetic implications of modern computer music technology.

He composed the music and did the sound-design for Martin Kušej’s 2022 production Geschlossene Gesellschaft at Burgtheater Wien (the Austrian National Theatre), the play was also performed at the Bregenzer Festspielhaus in April of 2022.
Aki Traar also composed the music and sound-design for the play Ich, Ikarus directed by Mechthild Harnischmacher (Vestibül 2021). Ich, Ikarus is nominated for a Stella22 award for outstanding theatre for a young audience

He was responsible for the sound design of Martin Kušej’s 2021 production Maria Stuart, which was presented at Salzburger Festspiele 2021 and Burgtheater 2021/22.

He has recently received a 6-month residency at Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris.  

Aki Traar has written and performed musical works at selected locations in Austria, including WUK, Steinergasse 8, Echoraum, etc. He has performed at WOW!Signal together with frequent collaborator Peter Trabitzsch.
Other projects include 2 theatre music internships at Burgtheater for Die Hermannsschlacht and Das Leben ein Traum, working closely with composer Bert Wrede and head of the Burgtheater sound department, David Müllner.

Aki Traar has written the score for Wiener Stimmung #11, directed by Mechthild Harnischmacher starring Lillith Hässle, for Burgtheater Online (2020). The series Wiener Stimmung was nominated for a Nestroy Award in the category Corona Spezialpreis.

Aki Traar is an Alumnus of the United World College of the Adriatic in Duino, Italy and has attended schools in Brighton (GB), Québec City (CAN), Vienna (AUT) and Trieste (ITA). Other important educational histories include Musikschule Rudolfsheim Fünfhaus and studies with composer and conductor Stefano Sacher (ITA).

He has concluded other internships alongside Nora Kurzweil, working in set design and art direction for music videos for Leftboy (ferdinand) and Austrian Apparel, as well as worked as a set assistant for Birgit Sabine Sommers movie Der Graben/Grapa. He has also been a freelancer for Ressler Kunst Auktionen since 2015, working at auctions and exhibitions.
